What is Methadone and How Does It Work?

Methadone is a powerful prescription drug. It is a narcotic substitute that decreases the body's urges and cravings to use opiates such as Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Percocet, and Heroin and stops withdrawal symptoms. Methadone is similar to other narcotics, so it is important that a great deal of care be taken during methadone maintenance treatment, particularly during detoxification.

Methadone taken orally is extremely effective and eliminates the dangers of intravenous drug use.

Methadone has a long lasting effect, therefore it is necessary to dose once per day. The dosage is taken orally in the form of a liquid.

Are There any Possible Interactions?

Methadone is a powerful prescription drug that must be used with caution. It is important that you provide your primary counselor with a list of all of your current medications. It is also important that you notify your primary care physician that you are taking methadone.

Warning!!! Avoid Alcohol, Benzodiazepines, and Pentazocine (Talwin) when using methadone. Excessive intake of alcohol while using methadone may cause breathing to stop resulting in possible coma or death. Benzodiazepines may lead to difficulty breathing as well as cognitive impairment. Pentazocine (Talwin) blocks the effects of methadone and will result in severe withdrawal.

What Are The Possible Side Effects?

Some of the most commonly reported side effects include light-headedness, dizziness, extreme tiredness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, swelling of the ankles, and skin rash. If you are experiencing any of these side effects, please notify the medical staff immediately.

Less commonly reported side effects include dry mouth, restlessness, headache, insomnia, agitation, constipation, low heart rate, faintness, changes in sex drive, irregular menstruation, and swelling of the joints.

If you experience any of these symptoms, see your primary counselor to determine if a medical appointment should be made.

Is It Possible to Overdose On Methadone?

Yes, it is possible to overdose on methadone. To prevent an overdose, take only the recommended prescribed dosage. Never mix methadone with alcohol or illicit drugs. Inform your primary counselor of all other prescribed medications that you are taking.
